The "Traffic Light" Method for Marin Hikers: How to Return to the Trails Without Back Pain

Living here in the Bay Area, movement isn’t just exercise—it’s our lifestyle. Whether you’re hiking the Dipsea Trail or cycling through Marin, back pain can feel like a prison sentence.

A common mistake I see with active clients in San Rafael is over-bracing. You tweak your back, so you start hiking with your core locked down tight. You think you’re protecting your spine, but you’re actually creating rigid, inefficient movement.

Efficient Movement = More Hips, Less Spine To get back to high performance, we need to teach your body to move efficiently again. This means using your powerful hip muscles (glutes and hamstrings) rather than relying on your lumbar spine or a stiffened core.

How We Train "Safe" Movement We use a Graded Exposure approach. We don't just throw you back on Mt. Tam immediately. We use a Traffic Light System to gauge your readiness:

  1. Range of Motion: Can you hinge at the hips without guarding?

  2. Resistance: Can we load that pattern?

  3. Stress: Can you maintain that form when your heart rate is up?

If you are stuck in the "Red Light" zone—where every hike ends in stiffness—it’s time to retrain your brain’s safety mechanisms.
