Patient Win: Eliminating the "Butt Wink" to Get Back to Heavy Lifting

A local weightlifter came into our San Rafael clinic frustrated that their back pain was halting their hypertrophy goals. Every time they squatted past parallel, they felt a sharp pinch in their lower spine.

The Assessment During our first session, we ran a mechanical audit. We didn't need an MRI; we just needed to watch them move.

As they lowered into the squat, their form looked great until the very bottom. At the lowest point, they lost spinal integrity. Their pelvis tucked underneath them in a classic "butt wink," forcing their lumbar spine into loaded flexion and putting severe pressure on the discs.

The Win We pulled them off the heavy weights and entered our 30-Day Anti-Fragile Intensive. We retrained their core to maintain a neutral arch throughout the entire range of motion. By simply giving them the motor skills to control their pelvis at the bottom of the squat, the pinch vanished entirely. They are now back to setting personal records safely.
